    Margaret Studenc has been the brains and leader of LSS since 2009. She has many strengths including creative innovation,  quick wit, and a strong passion for helping people. She tutors in grammar and English. Margaret  has been teaching since 1985, which means that she is “old as dirt.” In addition to teaching, she has worked for a newspaper and worked in multiple administrative positions in higher education at both the community college and four-year levels. Studenc’s bachelor’s and master’s degrees are in English from Western Carolina University. She has been at HCC since 1999, and she tells her students, “This is my dream job.” Her favorite things to do include reading, spending time with her family, and shopping.

    Jessica Sluder is the Testing Technician for Learning Support Services. She is responsible for proctoring tests and working with instructors to provide a smooth testing process.  Jessica Sluder has her AAS from HCC in Fish and Wildlife Management Technology and a certificate in Forest Management. She has worked as a naturalist, educator, and outreach coordinator for Balsam Mountain Preserve. Working in LSS allows her to help students along their journey which is her passion. Jessica enjoys spending time fly fishing and hiking with her husband, birding, and cross stitching.

      Susan Roberts, Learning Specialist

      Susan Roberts has been with the learning center since 2006 where she works as the Learning Specialist. She specializes in tutoring students in study skills and biology. She is also responsible for tutor training and other center projects.  Susan has been teaching biology at HCC since 2004. She loves working to help students reach their goals and is passionate about helping students build skills for success for school and work. She has her B.S. in Biology from Appalachian State University, and M.S. in Biology (WCU) and Educational Design and Technology (ASU). Her favorite pastime is spending time with her three kids and her husband, hiking, and learning new things.
